Pew supports initiatives that illuminate our nation’s rich history and contribute to an increased understanding of American democracy.

In recent years, Pew spearheaded fund-raising and contributed to the national campaign to preserve and display the nearly two-centuries-old flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to compose “The Star Spangled Banner.” The restored flag and its exhibit are the cornerstone of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., where a two-year renovation of the flag display was recently completed. Pew also donated to and raised funds for the new Capitol Visitor Center that accommodates Washington’s growing number of tourists.

Other examples of Pew’s national civic work include support for a new museum and visitor center at Gettysburg National Military Park and for a new project by noted documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, titled America’s Best Idea: Our National Parks.

Pew also works to make a difference in the lives of the nation’s citizens. It has been a major supporter of the substantial relief efforts undertaken in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters, both locally and worldwide.
