Since 1985, Pew has channeled creativity in the biomedical sciences through the biomedical scholars, Latin American fellows, and Pew-Stewart Scholars for Cancer Research programs, which award multiyear grants to promising early-career scientists in the United States and Latin America. 

Pew Biomedical Scholars

The Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences provides funding to young investigators of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of human health. The program supports the independent research of outstanding individuals who are in their first three years of their appointment at the assistant professor level.

  • Award: $75,000 per year for four years.
  • Candidates must be nominated by a participating research institution.
  • Awards are granted in the broad field of biomedical research, including areas such as bioengineering, biophysics, and chemistry

Pew Latin American Fellows

The Pew Latin American Fellows Program in the Biomedical Sciences provides support for young scientists from Latin America to receive postdoctoral training in the labs of top researchers in the United States. The program gives individuals an opportunity to further their scientific knowledge by promoting exchange and collaboration between investigators in the United States and Latin America.

  • Award: $30,000 annual salary stipend for two years of postdoctoral training in the US. Participants who return to Latin America and establish independent labs receive an additional $70,000 from Pew to purchase equipment and supplies.

The Pew-Stewart Scholars Program for Cancer Research is a national initiative designed to support promising early-career scientists whose research will accelerate discovery and advance progress towards a cure for cancer. Each year, the program—funded by The Alexander and Margaret Stewart Trust and administered by Pew—selects five new investigators who are in their first three years of their appointment at the assistant professor level.
