Research

The Gladyshev Lab studies mechanisms of redox regulation of cellular processes involved in physiological and pathophysiological states. Recent research has found that nearly every process in cells is redox controlled, but the major paradigm has been that cellular proteins are oxidized (damaged) by reactive oxygen species or other oxidants in a relatively unspecific way, and reduced (repaired) by designated reductases. Now, using new approaches in biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, I will investigate mechanisms for targeted, specific, reversible redox control and its role in cellular dynamics. These findings will shed light on the novel mechanisms of redox control and could lead to therapeutic interventions in the fields of aging or cancer.
