For decades, Philadelphia has had a reputation as an affordable place to live, with a comparatively high homeownership rate and relatively low rents. But in recent years, due to increasing growth and development, many city residents—especially those with lower incomes—are finding it more difficult to afford homeownership, rent, and other housing costs.
Pew’s research on housing in Philadelphia examines these topics and others, focusing on issues that affect residents’ ability to secure safe, affordable places to live; maintain their properties; and pass family homes from one generation to the next.
