The Pew Charitable Trusts sent a letter Feb. 20 urging the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy (ASTP) to strengthen its Health IT certification program to improve public health data reporting. Pew was responding to ASTP’s call for input on proposed removals or revisions of certification criteria.

Pew urged ASTP to maintain the immunization administration’s “Insights Condition” certification requirement and retain industry-developed standards for electronic case reporting. Pew also expressed continued support for new certification criteria for public health IT and recommended actions that ASTP and other federal partners should take to ease their adoption.
