Support for Programs Promoting a Better Understanding of Religion in the U.S.
The Pew Charitable Trusts’ religion program provides grantmaking support to organizations and programs that promote a better understanding of religion in the United States—particularly those that help bridge divides among people of diverse faiths and counter biases against religious groups. This work includes developing the evidence base for initiatives that counter intolerance, as well as providing financial support for Pew Research Center’s survey and demographic analyses on religion trends in the U.S. and other countries.
Organizations must be invited to apply for funding through this national program, which is administered by staff in Pew’s Philadelphia office and is part of the Philadelphia and scientific advancement portfolio.
Among the more recent projects the program has supported:
- A 2017 report on the past, present, and future of Philadelphia’s historic sacred places, published in collaboration with Pew’s Philadelphia research and policy initiative and experts at the University of Pennsylvania.
- A 2018 grant for the INSPIRES Index, an assessment tool that measures higher education institutions’ efforts to establish a welcoming campus climate for students of various religious identities.
- Research that culminated in a 2024 report exploring approaches that are making a lasting difference in bridging religious divides.
