On Aug. 1, 2025, The Pew Charitable Trusts responded to a request from the California Ocean Protection Council (OPC) for feedback on its draft 2026-30 strategic plan.

Pew’s letter recommends ways OPC can strengthen its strategic plan. This includes encouraging the council to use its existing statutory role to recommend state law changes in order to improve the conservation, protection, and restoration of ecosystems in state and federal waters off the California coast. In addition, Pew recommends that OPC help advance Tribal co-management of coastal waters and improve protection of tidal wetlands and estuaries.
