Minnesota Can Leverage Community Preparedness—and Nature—to Advance Climate Goals
Pew recommends that state leaders prioritize peatland conservation and implement a coordinated cross-agency strategy
On July 21, The Pew Charitable Trusts submitted comments to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency about the state’s 2025 Climate Action Framework update. Pew’s letter highlights the important role that Minnesota’s peatlands play in not only storing at least 4 billion metric tons of carbon but also supporting biodiversity and filtering and storing vast amounts of water. Pew also recommends setting specific action-based targets for conservation and restoration. In addition, the letter emphasizes the need for Minnesota officials to enhance the state’s resilience to fires, floods, and droughts by learning from initiatives in other states and implementing a strategic and coordinated climate adaptation program.
