Creating State Courts That Can Better Serve Communities

To understand how easily a single debt can upend someone’s life, consider this story: Pam has a job in Tennessee that pays double the minimum wage, but years ago, she had a medical bill that she was unable to pay. Eventually she was sued for that debt, but she missed her court date because she was at work. $22 billion
Across the globe, nations spend $22 billion a year on subsidies paid mostly to industrial fishing fleets to artificially lower the costs of fuel and vessel construction, ultimately allowing more fish to be caught than is sustainable.
Pew is now working to encourage swift entry into force of the 2022 World Trade Organization agreement that will limit subsidies used in illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, subsidies for fishing on overfished stocks and subsidies to vessels fishing on the unregulated high seas. Pew is also supporting countries in ongoing negotiations on additional rules to address subsides that contribute to overfishing and fishing vessel overcapacity in all ocean areas.
